About Commencement

Congratulations on your candidacy for a degree from one of the most distinguished universities in the United States. Graduation from the University of California, Santa Barbara signifies high achievement for the Class of 2018.

All graduates must wear regalia (cap and gown) at the June 15, 16 and 17 Commencement ceremonies. Regalia should be bought from the UCSB Bookstore starting April 30, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5:30 PM, and Saturday and Sunday, 11 AM to 4 PM. On June 16 and 17, UCSB Bookstore hours will be from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Bachelor’s degree candidates participating on June 16 or 17 should pick up stage passes inside the UCen main lobby (outside the UCSB Bookstore), June 11 through June 15, 9 AM to 4 PM. No one other than the student may pick up their stage pass. Please show your UCSB student I.D. or a legal picture I.D. to receive your pass. On June 16 and 17, stage passes will be available at the Events Center. Passes are specific to the ceremony you reserved and must be presented at the Events Center (student robing area) to gain entrance.

Master’s and doctoral degree candidates register for their stage pass at the Graduate Division web site at, which also contains all other information regarding the Graduate Student Commencement Ceremony.

The student processional line will form in the Events Center (Thunderdome) and proceed 1/4 mile to The Commencement Green. The walk from the Events Center to the Commencement Green includes walking on uneven pavement, and through grass, therefore high-heeled shoes are not recommended. Plan to arrive at the Events Center with your stage pass, cap and gown one hour prior to the beginning of the ceremony. Bachelor’s Degree Candidates need a stage pass to be admitted to the robing area and to participate in the ceremony. The processional will leave the Events Center 30 minutes prior to the ceremony. Please be prompt. To accommodate a disability, please call the Office of Event Management and Protocol at (805) 893-2117.

Out of respect for everyone having their names called, please remain seated until all of the graduates have been recognized and the ceremony has ended. Pre-arrange a specific site to meet your family and friends after the ceremony. When the ceremony ends, follow the recessional line up the Commencement Green. Following the recessional you can meet your family and friends at your pre-selected meeting place.

Drinking water will be available at the Events Center student staging area. All food or beverages (cups, cans, plastic or glass bottles, flasks, coolers) except water must be disposed of in appropriate trash/recycle containers. Alcoholic beverages, including celebratory champagne, are not permitted at Commencement and will be confiscated and discarded.

An official Commencement photographer, GradImages, will record all graduates receiving congratulations from the Chancellor. Only official photographers will be permitted around the stage area. The ceremonies will also be professionally videotaped. Visit the GradImages web site at or call (800) 261-2576.

Seating is limited due to the large number of graduates and guests. NO tickets are needed however we request you to limit your guest count to six. Guests should arrive at least one hour before the ceremony begins to allow time to reach the Commencement site and secure seating. To ensure that families and guests hear graduates’ names and see each graduate receive his or her degree, please remain in your seat and maintain silence until all graduates have been introduced. Your cooperation will be sincerely appreciated by the graduates, their families and friends.

Additional on-site accommodations for those with disabilities and the elderly include air-conditioned lecture halls with a large screen that will show a live feed of the Commencement ceremonies. The live feed will show in the Theater and Dance building, room 1701 and Loma Pelona Center. These locations will allow for easy access to meet your graduating student after the ceremony. Seating is on a first come - first served basis.
