THE WEB STANDARDS GROUP
RECOMMENDS that Web pages be designed to a display size
of 800 x 600 pixels. When maximum expansion of the browser
header and scroll bars is accounted for, the Web document would
actually be designed for 760 x 420 pixels. 420 pixels will
keep the page
"above the fold" but WSG does not emphasize this point.
The width of 760 is the principal recommendation.
The use of adjustable page width, sometimes called
liquid design, allows for adjustable resolution, and is a fine
alternative to fixed page width.
Make sure that your page content prints well. Test
by printing, and if necessary, provide a printable alternative.
A width of 540 pixels is the recommended size for printing to an 8 1/2
x 11"
page.
