SCREEN RESOLUTION

THE WEB STANDARDS GROUP RECOMMENDS that campus Web pages targeting desktop or notebook browsers be designed for display adapters capable of at least 800 x 600 pixels screen resolution with 16-bit color, up to a recommended screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels with 32-bit color. Designing to the latter resolution is optimal for users accessing Web sites with popular screen reader software.
Choosing a resolution within the range outlined above will allow you to target a large audience. Liquid layouts, which adjust page width to the browser window size, are a flexible alternative to fixed-width layouts. Regardless of the style you choose, the WSG recommends that you use CSS rather than HTML tables to control your layout, since CSS-based design is more accessible.
Make sure that your page content prints well. Test by printing, and if necessary, provide a printable alternative. A width of 540 pixels is the recommended size for printing to an 8-1/2” x 11" page.
