Your Web pages must comply with UC and UCSB policies.
In the recommendations below, WSG provides guidelines and resources
to address only the most common policy issues of
concern to UCSB Web developers/managers.
1. Copyright.
The Regents of the University of California hold the copyright
to all UC system domain Web site content. We recommend you
include copyright information in the footer of every page on
your Web site, formatted according to the Web Guide Footer specifications.
2. Terms of Use.
The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Administrative
Services, has developed and maintains a Terms
of Use document that is specifically concerned with Web
sites in the ucsb.edu domain. This document defines the ucsb.edu
Web space and includes sections on Links to Third Party Sites,
Privacy, Access and Use of Services, Restrictions On Use Of
Materials, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, as well
as disclaimer and limit of liability statements.
The WSG recommends that you include a link on your Web page
to the Terms of Use document in your Footer.
For instructions on how to "include" Terms of Use
content in a Web page, see Add Terms of Use to Your
Web Site.
3. Electronic Information Security.
If your Web site collects data, follow guidelines in the UC
Business and Finance Bulletin IS-3 on Electronic Information
Security (http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/policies/bfb/is3.pdf).
This policy provides critical information about measures to
promote the security of and access to electronic data.
4. Advertising on UCSB Web Sites.
The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Administrative
Services, has also developed and maintains resources related
to acknowledgements and advertising on UCSB Web sites. These
include the following.
- Acknowledgements
and Advertising on University Electronic Resources:
A set of guidelines designed to provide basic principles
and examples of acceptable and unacceptable acknowledgements
and advertising on UCSB electronic resources to assist
Web administrators, designers, and others to abide by University
policy and applicable law.
- Advertising
Matrix: A matrix that displays what kinds of advertising
or third-party symbols (banner ads, sponsor logos, links
to online stores, etc.) are permitted or disallowed on
various kinds of UCSB Web sites.
5. Links to Non-UCSB Web Sites.
Choose one of these methods to give users access
to information on the University's position in relation to
non-UCSB sites linked from within the UCSB Web space.
- Include a link on your Web page to the UCSB Terms
of Use document (see the Web Guide Footer recommendation).
- Incorporate original content from the Terms of Use document into your Web site (for instructions, see Add Terms of Use to Your Web Site).
6. Unauthorized Use of Data/Online Applications.
The WSG recommends that the following statement be included
on the login page of any UCSB online applications that give
access to user data:
"This is official University of California Santa Barbara
information. Unauthorized access, disclosure, or use of this
information may result in disciplinary action and/or criminal
prosecution. See UCSB Rules of
Conduct."
7. Usage of Data.
[IN PROGRESS] The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Administrative
Services, is developing a generic statement for display on
the login pages of online applications that collect potentially
sensitive user data, describing how that data will be used.
Where necessary, the Campus Policy and Records Management Coordinator
will work with individual departments to develop a version
of this statement that is customized for specific applications.
8. Use of Images/Obtaining Photo Releases.
If you are taking your own photos or using an outside source,
it is recommended that you obtain appropriate permission. See
our Image
Resources page for further information, including links
to release forms provided by the UCSB Risk Management Department.
