Can faculty use furlough days on teaching days?
| The Office of the President has decided that faculty furlough days will not occur on instructional days (days for which a faculty member is scheduled to give lectures, lead classes or workshops, have scheduled office hours or have other scheduled face-to-face responsibilities for students). The announcement can be found at

Can faculty use furlough days for consulting activities?
Yes, for one year faculty can use furlough days for consulting beyond the current 39 days. See link below for further details: www.ucsb.edu/campus-topics/budget/opa.pdf

Can faculty do research on furlough days and charge this to their contracts and grants?
| Yes. However, the contract/grant language must allow this, or the granting agency must approve it. In additions the contract/grant must have sufficient funds to reallocate for this increased effort. Of course, use of furlough days for paid research days or consulting days are mutually exclusive. | Can faculty use research gifts or endowed chair income to pay themselves for furlough days during the academic year? |
Providing the terms of the endowment permit this, yes they can. The approval of the fund administrator must be provided, and campus policies on endowment must be followed.

Can faculty transfer a portion of the yield of their endowed chairs to colleagues in need?
This may be done if the allocation is to be used for legitimate research purposes and is consistent with the terms of the endowment. "Legitimate research purposes" include summer salary for a period during which the faculty member is engaged in research. Again the approval of the fund administrator must be provided, and campus policies on endowment must be followed.
