UCSB on the Web - There From the Beginning
Created in the mid-1960's, UCSB's On-Line System
was one of the earliest computer networks. Because of the strength
of the On-LineSystem, UCSB was chosen as one of the four original
sites for the ARPAnet, the oldest network comprising the modern
Internet.
UCSB's Web Site
Thanks to the dynamic nature of the web, we are
able to make enhancements to UCSB's web site on an ongoing basis.
Many of these changes are based on feedback sent to the Webmaster,
so contact
us . Periodically, we perform a substantial redesign of
the site that allows us to significantly re-engineer it to streamline
navigation and improve usability.
This edition of UCSB's web site was introduced in the
fall of 2002. Its goal is to provide users with easy navigation
to web sites and resources offered by UCSB.
Features of Note
The home page now has headlines linking to dedicated
pages for news stories, events, and campus topics, which will be
updated frequently.
The home page also includes some extra features
you will discover when you roll your mouse over certain areas: the
university's address line will link you to a MapQuest page that
will create driving instructions to UCSB, and if you click on UCSB's
phone number you will go to our campus phone directories. The home
page now includes a link to the current local temperature and a
4-day forecast.
UCSB has now integrated the award winning Google search
engine to produce the most useful responses to search inquiries.
As a matter of Gaucho pride, it is worth noting that Urs Hölzle,
who carries the staff title of "Google Fellow," joined
Google from UCSB, where he was an associate professor of computer
science.
